Student On-Call Maintenance
Duties and Responsibilities


Department of Housing Operations

The Student On-call Maintenance position assists with facilities maintenance and repair work for the residential community. This position reports to the Coordinator for Facilities, Housing Operations. Work is conducted in the Housing public areas and student rooms. The applicant must live on-campus and remain living on-campus throughout the term of employment. The employee provides immediate response for all types of maintenance and custodial needs and must remain on-campus while in an on-call status.

Remuneration

Student Maintenance On-call employees are provided a bed space in a double occupancy room for the Fall 2007 Semester at no charge.

Work Hours

The position requires the employee be in an on-call status on a rotating basis as determined by the Coordinator of Facilities with other Student Maintenance On-call staff members during the following times:

  • Weekdays
    • Monday 10PM until 8AM Tuesday
    • Tuesday 10PM until 8AM Wednesday
    • Wednesday 10PM until 8AM Thursday
    • Thursday 10PM until 8AM Friday
  • Weekend
    • Friday 10PM until Monday 8AM

The employee may also work up to 20 hours per week as a member of the Department of Housing Operations Facilities staff. If the employee chooses to work the additional 20 hours, they must submit a proposed work schedule to the Coordinator of Facilities or his designee for review and approval within 24 hours of acceptance of this position. Scheduled hours will be in a minimum of 2 hour shifts. The current rate of pay for this position is $7.00 per hour.

Qualifications

Applicants must have experience using hand tools and handheld power tools. This position requires an ability to quickly learn methods of repair. Must possess good communication skills, be flexible with a variety of assignments and must be able to exercise good judgment. Experience working within a customer service oriented environment is mandatory.

The employee must be able to maintain a professional attitude, be friendly and congenial, promote departmental and university policies and represent the University of North Florida, the Department of Housing Operations and the Department of Residence Life to residents and guests in a positive and supportive manner. The applicant will use diplomacy while working with individuals of various backgrounds and ages.

The employee’s work includes, but is not limited to:

  • Changing light bulbs
  • Resetting circuit breakers
  • Unplugging clogged toilets, tubs and floor drains
  • Repairing leaky faucets
  • Replacing A/C filters
  • Installing peep-holes
  • Tightening and lubricating door hinges
  • Moving and resetting furniture
  • Bunking and lofting beds (and vice versa)
  • Facilitating minor furniture repairs
  • Providing courier services
  • Policing the residential areas for trash and debris removal
  • Sweeping sidewalks and courtyards
  • Performing custodial (mopping, dusting, sweeping, etc.)
  • And other duties as assigned

Job Expectations

While on duty, On-Call Student Maintenance workers must wear a staff shirt as well as a picture ID card issue by the Department of Housing Operations. Staff is not permitted to use tobacco products while on-duty. The use of alcohol is prohibited while on-call. Staff must be courteous at all times and display a helpful attitude while in the performance of their duties. The use of profanity is not permitted.

An on-call radio will be provided to the employee for use within the scope of their employment. The employee will assume custody and liability of the on-call Radio and must keep the on-call radio within their possession at all times while on duty. The On-call Student Maintenance worker must respond immediately to all calls from the Osprey Hall Welcome Desk. At the time of the call, the On-Call Student Maintenance worker must:

  1. Verify the description of the service request and the location
  2. Proceed directly to the work location and commence work
    1. If unable to complete the repair or resolve the service request independently, the On-Call Student Maintenance worker will contact appropriate On-Call Maintenance staff member by Nextel radio and report the status of the service request.
  3. The On-Call Maintenance Staff member will assist On-call Student Maintenance verbally via radio and/or assume the responsibility for the service request.
  4. If and when the On-Call Maintenance staff member assumes responsibility for the service request, the On-Call Student Maintenance worker will remain at the location of the service request until the On-Call Maintenance staff member arrives at the work location.
  5. If the On-Call Maintenance staff member requests assistance, the On-Call Student Maintenance will assist until released by the On-Call Maintenance staff member.
  6. The On-Call Student maintenance staff member will log the event for further review by the Coordinator for Facilities.

All calls received from the Department of Housing Operations professional staff and/or Department of Residence Life professional staff must be responded to within 3 minutes.
